Saturated Fats
For decades now we have been told to lower our saturated fat or we risk life and limb. The call has seen the rise of not only extensive educational campaigns in the name of our health, but a multi-billion dollar industry built around low-fat/fat-free/reduce-fat products and weight loss strategies that employ such products to meet the goals of weight loss seekers. However, reviews of decades of research highlighted the lack of actual research on specific fatty acids, which in turn uncovered the reality that potentially not all saturated fat was bad for us, shock horror.

ABDOMINAL FAT; The Facts (ONLINE)

We are all aware that abdominal body fat can be a challenge to shift, but do you understand the issues in the different types of abdominal fat (in both storage and liberation) and are you up-to-date on the very latest on what exercise is best to move abdominal fat safely. What works and what doesn't, essential knowledge for PTs. 

In this short course you will cover, the lowdown on fat (physiology of the fat cell (adipocyte); Development of adipocytes; lipocyte secretions and ‘behaviour’), body fat distribution and measurement (location of body fat stores; waist circumference (WC); waist to hip ratio (WHR) 16), what is abdominal fat? Getting fat in and out of cells; a review (meals and blood lipids; mobilisation of fatty acids; the cycle of lipogenesis, lipolysis and release of FFAs in the body; exercise and fatty acid mobilisation), tackling the issue (Moderate or vigorous exercise? Low or high intensity? Aerobic or anaerobic? What about post-exercise fat oxidation?) and to end we look at some new research and some tips you can use at home (hint hint; Green tea and obesity).

DIETARY ASSESSMENT METHODS (ONLINE)

CALCULATING EER, USING NRV'S AND WORKING OUT DIET DIARIES
Dietary assessment for many is an essential part of the results they gain with clients, so understanding what tool to use, how to apply it, analyse the data and implement changes is vital. If you have ever wonder where to start with a clients diet diary, or wanted to get the most from the time spent on diet analysis, this is the course for you! This short course guides you through weighed and non-weighed diet diary options and their limitations and benefits, through to software to analyse data. You will learn how to calculate information using the Nutrient Reference Values (NRVs) such as EER (Estimated Energy Requirements) and nutrient requirements, including case studies to ensure practical application. 

In this short course you will cover, the ideal tool and dietary assessment software; Types of dietary assessment tools weighed and non-weighted food records and food diaries; Data collection and analysis factors and examples of how its done in the industry; How to calculate Estimated Energy Expenditure (EER) and related requirements; Calculating anthropometric data including BMI and Waist-to-hip ratios; Dietary intake and general observations from diet diary, energy requirements (required calories) using NRVs; Making changes, attitudes and behaviour; Practical application, Case studies, practical scenarios, links to relevant sites and reports and surveys

Duration:  6 hours of study

Is sugar really bad for you?

Finally the truth about sugars in one simple straightforward course!

The following is a brief guide to the type of detail and content you will cover in this course:
Introduction to sugars, classification, structure and function. Sugars in products, such as sweeteners, sugar consumption figures and low-carbohydrate vs low-fat diets. Absorption and metabolism of sugar, blood sugar regulation and the effect of insulin. Sugars effect on health and a review of metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance. Sugar to fat (denovo lipogenesis (DNL)). What does the science say? Does any sugar get converted to fat? Why humans can't convert sugar to fat and the real link to overweightness. 

Duration: Expected to be 6 hours of study (all materials are emailed in pdf)
Accreditation: 3.5 REPs NZ CPDs (CECs points) and Fitness Australia for 6 CEC points  ( CECs expire 30/5/2016); Physical Activity Australia: Approximate conversion of 4-8 CECs to PDPs = 2 PDPs.  May be applicable upon request to your registering body
